Storm the Castle

Storm the Castle Dryland Derby will be held in the stunningly beautiful Castle Provincial Park in Alberta on September 29-30, 2018.  We are offering cani-cross, 1 and 2 dog bike, 1 and 2 dog scooter and 4 dog cart classes. All classes will be run on the same 5 km (3 mile) track that weaves in and out of the forest and offers stunning views of the mountains – if you dare to lift your eyes off the trail.  The event is IFSS accredited (except for 2 dog bike which isn’t recognized by the IFSS).

Online registration is found here.  On-line registration closes on Monday September 24 at midnight (MST). You can register on race day (cash only) up until the end of the Driver’s Meeting.  A $5 late fee will be added to your registration.

We have a group campsite booked just minutes from the start line and you can reserve a site for the Friday and Saturday night when you register online for the race.

Online registration closes on September 25, 2018.  You will however be able to register at the event up to an hour prior to the musher’s meeting on September 29 but the prices will be $10 more than those listed online.  Camping at the group site requires pre-registration, however you are welcome to find your own site at one of the other nearby campgrounds.

You can stay up to date with the latest and greatest about the race by visiting our Facebook Event Page.

Please note: You will not be able to contact the race organizers via phone, email, or text after September 27 as the race area has no cell phone coverage.

Thomas Porter put together a quick little video for us so you can get a better feel for the terrain and course -

Driving Directions:

This is a pin to the Race Site. The parking lot has a sign for the Carbondale Staging Area.  If you are staying at the group campsite, you’ll see the signs for the Syncline Group Sites on the right hand side about 2 minutes before you reach the Race Site.

Accommodation Options:

We have reserved the two group campsites and will be having some sort of BBQ/Potluck at least one of the evenings so we’d love for you to stay there and enjoy the camaraderie of the other mushers.  There are also other campgrounds in the area – Castle Bridge is the closest, but there is also Castle Falls, Lynx and Beaver Mines which would be about a 20 minute drive of the race site.  It is also possible to camp in some of the designated “random camping” areas in the park.  These are all first come, first serve, and have absolutely no services – you basically just find a patch of land and set up.  These are free, however you do require a permit to camp in them.  You can find out more about all the camping options here. Please note –  If you purchase camping with your race registration, we’ll have saved a spot in the group site for you (Syncline A or B).

You can find a list of Pet Friendly hotels in Pincher Creek (about 30 minutes away from race site) here.

Chiropractor on Site:

Turn 2 Chiropractic will be onsite and taking appointments for both humans and dogs. You can contact Dr. Tanya in advance via email ( and get a veterinarian referral form, or talk to her at the event to discuss a suitable time for an adjustment.

Extend your Vacation:

If you want to stay in the park before or after the event, we encourage you to do so.  The park was recently closed to OHV use in the southern part, which has left behind many great trails suitable for dryland mushing.  Here is where you can find a trail map.
